Landscape design at the new Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology IME-BR in Giessen
This design stems from the urban development concept. Accordingly, in view of the area’s future development, a generous public space is already being laid out to the east of the Institute. Although initially designed as parking, it will later be transformed into a tree-covered focal point and meeting place for staff at the neighbouring institutes. With a change of material, this central space is designed as an inlay in the middle of the surrounding roads. The ‘square’ character is further underscored by planting broad-canopied trees, set out in a grid-pattern (‘Art for Architecture’).
The roofs of the Institute and storage areas will be extensively greened. This greening not only improves the site’s microclimate, but also provides cooling for people using roof terrace in summer. In addition, diverse plant species will visually enhance common areas and workspaces.
