The open spaces of the new headquarters building for MUCFC – the emerging up-and-coming financial service provider and a subsidiary of China Merchants Bank and China Unicom – are composed of forecourts and roof gardens. The headquarters office tower is 180 metres tall, and has an austere façade.
The building has a glass elevation with vertical decorative strips at various angles and with differently structured surfaces. Consequently, as the light changes, the facade takes on a depth of colour.
This motif is echoed in the design of the hard landscaping, where the paving pattern takes its cue from the building façade. The external spaces incorporate this same play of light by employing components with contrasting lines and depth of colour. Viewed from a variety of perspectives, passers by see the building projected onto the decoratively banded black/grey granite surfaces of the hard landscaping, hence reinforcing the connection between the building and its surroundings.
The lower blocks open onto the city’s south square like a shop window. This is where the public areas and restaurants are located, plus the staff area with a fitness centre, office canteen and conference rooms.
A simple design language characterises the square, which is further enhanced by a dynamic landscape design employing water features.
