The historic St. Georgenberg monastery is being reactivated within the urban fabric and made more attractive through the redesign and replanting of the monastery garden. The newly designed inner courtyard of the monastery references the historically documented layout of the 18th century, with a courtyard area and a garden area featuring lush flowering perennials and a display and teaching bed with over 50 historical medicinal plants based on historical models. The monastery garden is divided into bed structures with main and side paths that invite visitors to stroll, and benches that invite them to linger in peace. A fountain splashes in the center. Visitors are allowed to harvest the scattered kitchen herbs, rows of berry bushes, and apple trees with local varieties—keyword “edible city.” In the rest of the courtyard area, the paving will be reduced and replaced by herb lawns.

In addition, the adjacent large parking lot will be dismantled, enabling further renaturation of the Nemphe. This will restore the historic, unique location of the monastery in the Nemphenaue. In addition, the demolition and unsealing of the parking lot will free up space to reactivate the valuable floodplain. At the same time, the lost parking space must be relocated. Where possible, this will be done using permeable materials and targeted tree planting in order to create a climate-adapted, green, and needs-based parking area. Looking at the construction project as a whole, there has been and will be no additional sealing of land. Instead, the urban space has been reorganized and expanded to include valuable open space for fauna, flora, and people.

The fountain basin with water feature forms the central element in the newly designed monastery garden. Aqua Activ carried out the installation. Clad in red sandstone to match the monastery walls, the fountain has a bubbler, fogger and lighting. Surrounded by lush flowering perennials and educational and display beds, the monastery garden offers a harmonious atmosphere, not least thanks to the acoustics of the fountain.
