The redevelopment of the Rathausmarkt and the adjacent Amalienstraße is creating an urban space in the centre of Bebras that is more than just functional infrastructure: a place to arrive, linger and create – precisely composed, clearly structured and enhanced with atmosphere.
Spanning around 3,730 m², the historic centre of Bebras is being reimagined. The design conceives of the site as a cohesive whole in which materials, accessibility and the quality of the environment engage in a balanced dialogue.
Maintaining continuity, enhancing quality
The design approach focuses on further developing what already exists rather than replacing it. Large existing trees are retained as elements that define the space’s identity and form its green backbone. Additional new plantings reinforce this structure and create new, varied areas for people to linger.
The surfaces are being redesigned – using a carefully selected combination of materials comprising
two-thirds high-quality concrete blocks and one-third small cobblestones. This interplay creates a calm yet vibrant appearance that aids orientation and visually unifies the space.
Spatial structure
The reinterpretation of the staircase at Rathausmarkt is a central element of the design. It redefines the space, improves circulation and creates clear transitions between the different levels.
All entrances, squares and paths are consistently made accessible. This is complemented by an integrated guidance system for the visually impaired, which aids orientation without disrupting the design’s clarity. The result is an urban space that is equally accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
A Place to Linger
The new Town Hall Square is deliberately designed to encourage people to linger. Carefully placed seating, discreetly designed features and functional details such as bicycle parking spaces and bollards form a calm, durable range of street furniture.
A particular highlight is the transformation of the existing fountain:
The classic water feature has been replaced by a contemporary, ground-level fountain installation with lighting effects. It creates a dynamic focal point that brings the area to life during the day and creates a atmospheric ambience in the evening.
